Political Patriarch McNulty Dies

mcnulty_jack.jpgGREEN ISLAND - Former Green Island Mayor Jack McNulty has passed away.

McNulty served as Green Island's mayor for nearly 30 years, retiring seven years ago. He also served in the 1970s as Albany County sheriff.

His son Michael McNulty is a former U.S. congressman and his daughter Ellen McNulty Ryan is Green Island's current mayor. She was actually her father's successor in the mayor's office.

When McNulty's retirement was announced, his son described him by saying he stood "for everything that's good and honest and decent about public life."

McNulty grew up in Green Island, attending elementary school at St. Joseph's and then going to LaSalle Institute. He later served in the Navy during World War II.

His political career began when he was elected town supervisor in Green Island in 1949. From there he served as mayor for 30 years. That was interrupted by one term as Albany County sheriff.

"He was a public servant par excellence for almost half a century, who delivered time-and-again for his constituents in Green Island and beyond," U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said in a statement.

Schumer says he was struck by McNulty's humility and good nature.

Funeral arrangements will be set up at the McNulty Funeral Home.
