House Catches Fire At 134 George Street
GREEN ISLAND – The cause of a Wednesday night blaze which displaced three residents is currently under investigation, said Green Island Fire Chief Robert Bourgeois.
The two-alarm fire likely started in the rear and on the first floor of the two-story wooden frame building at 134 George St. The tenants of the building were asleep at the time and a neighbor saw the flames and alerted the authorities.
After calling the police at around 10:13 p.m., the neighbor proceeded to get the residents out of the house. There were no reported injuries, said Bourgeois.
"We saw a lot of flames and smoke upon arrival," he said.
The resident believes his two kittens may have perished, but the dog got out safely.
It took 30 firefighters from Green Island, Troy, Cohoes, and Watervliet about 90 minutes to control the fire.
Investigators from Watervliet are at the scene today to determine the cause of the blaze then they will do see if it is a complete loss.
"There was a lot of structural damage and the roof collapsed in the back," said Bourgeois.
The adjacent homes on George Street also suffered minor smoke and water damage.
The Watervliet Arsenal’s fire crew also assisted.
